As a first time consultant – ever – it’s an experience. I love marketing. I love the aspect of it. I especially love the graphic design and communications side of marketing. But, I have never been into the whole telemarketing or direct sales part of it. Why? In a nutshell, I’m actually a shy person. Sure, I was a cheerleader both for Pop Warner and high school and yeah, I was dancing up on the bar at a club when I first met my husband… but, it was not because I was a social butterfly, it’s because I love to dance (as long as it involved other people dancing along side me too).
But see, put me in the spotlight, let me go solo, and whoa, boy. Houston, we have a problem. There’s comfort in knowing other people are doing the same thing you are – at the same time. Chances are, your audience is not focused on you – and only you. You have the ability to botch up and have the possibility of no one seeing it – because they were watching someone else at the same time. Not the case in direct sales or telemarketing. It’s one-on-one. Mano y mano. It’s YOU walking the line. The trick is not to take disinterest personally. Yes, I know. Easier said than done. This is something I need to over come as well.
No, direct sales is not easy for everyone. It’s not easy for me.
The wonderful thing is with HM storybooks, all you need to do is have it out there – for people to see. People will ask! Trust me. That’s the majority of the way I’ve started HM conversations. And even with every successful bite, you don’t always reel in the fish. It gets pretty frustrating, or in my case, knocks my morale down. But, as my sponsor says, you are planting the seed. Sometimes it takes a little time for plants to grow.
Keep that in mind.
I know I am.
